"To travel is to live" as Hans Christian Andersen put it, and we actually followed one of his routes quite close on our trip to the Saxonian Swiss (Sächsische Schweiz). From time to time he travelled quite long distances on foot, 20 miles a day wasn't unusual.

We do use a car mostly when abroad, but biking is an often used possibility.

We don't own a car but are members of a car sharing organization, if we need a car it will be booked over the internet.
